The Four Garbage Bags of the Apocalypse

Day 3 of purging finds me sorting through all of my clothes. I've managed to whittle down my wardrobe to fit into a single closet. I never thought this day would come! More ruthless editing has found me staring at four FULL bags of clothes wondering why I held onto this stuff for so long. The short answer; because I had room to. I didn't have to make choices on what to donate because I had the space to hoard all of it. Now I don't have a choice. We're living a lot smaller and I just don't have room for those "in case of" clothes anymore.

Four garbage bags full of clothes. Where did I find the room for all of this before??
I had far too many lounge ware options, workout clothes (aka more acceptable sweatpants), pants, and tees. All of those had to go! It feels amazing to know all of those things that once had meaning and value, are no longer valuable. Purging feels great, and is pretty cyclical in that the more I purge, the more I want to purge.

Now my wardrobe is filled with clothes that fit, shoes I like, and jackets I wear. When I picked up an item, I had to make a decision to keep or toss. Here are the questions I used to determine if an item was worth keeping...
  1. Is this something I wore within the last 6 months?
  2. If I came across this today, would I buy it?
  3. Am I keeping this out of sentimentality or because it was a gift?
  4. Will I miss it if it's gone?
  5. Does this fit?
  6. Will I wear this in another season?
  7. Is this a good color on me/is it still my style?
  8. Have I ever worn this?
  9. Is this item stained or damaged?
  10. Does this bring me joy?
Now that 90% of the kitchen and 100% of my clothes are sorted, I'm feeling lighter than I have in years! But there is still a lot of clutter to sort through. We have a whole garage (single car, but still!) that needs attending. Luckily my husband is on board and very supportive of this journey towards minimalism. Without him, I'd still be curled up in a ball binge watching some crap show. Thank you all for your support and encouragement too!
"Storage is not a solution. Just because it's out of sight, doesn't mean it's out of mind. Your clutter is sill there, hanging over your head, piled beneath your feet, lurking in the dark corners of your home." -missminimalist.com
